As Margaret Beckett Secretary of State for the Environment said when she visited Glow-worm in June 2003 to promote the EWP.

“…1 April 2005 does represent an achievable, as well as a necessary, date for implementing the new standards for boilers. And the industry should start working now to gear itself up for that date…”

Condensing gas boilers will not have to be fitted in all new and replacement situations. Oil boilers will be excluded altogether until April 2007. Go to Part L1 Regulations for more details.

This section of the site gives you all the latest information on the EWP with regular updates on developments and how they will affect you as they happen.

The EWP has four main objectives:
• to put ourselves on a path to cut the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions by some 60% by about 2050
• to maintain the reliability of energy supplies
• to promote competitive [energy] markets in the UK and beyond, helping to raise the rate of sustainable economic growth and to improve our productivity
• to ensure that every home is adequately and affordably heated. The Building Regulations Part L1 revisions will be used to drive a switch to SEDBUK A and SEDBUK B condensing boilers (90% and 86% efficient). Gas boilers will be fast-tracked for April 2005, with the other new Part L Regulations to come into effect from Jan 2006. This means that from April 2005 the majority of new and replacement gas central heating boilers fitted must be either SEDBUK A or SEDBUK B rated.
